Mulching for winter landscaping

Keep your landscaping healthy and looking great by applying mulch before the temperature drops too low. At Vallan, we recommend applying mulch to your landscaping in the late fall or early winter, but definitely before the first freeze.

Why to winter mulch

Mulching before the winter is great for many reasons: maintaining rich and moist soil around plants, preventing erosion and suppressing weed growth.

What happens when you mulch

Applying just two to four inches of mulch around your plants provides a warmer environment for the plant roots and organisms which benefit soil. With the new mulch layer you will also minimize the amount of weed growth in your flowerbeds going into the spring.

How to mulch your flowerbeds

Before mulching any flower beds, you want to be sure to remove any girdling roots and weeds. Then add a layer of organic mulch – two to three inches for finer mulch and three to four inches for thicker material.

  • Spread evenly throughout the beds

  • Cover new bare areas

  • Leave the base of trunks exposed
